Altos Ventures Recruits Richard Song, Former Coupang CFO, as Partner
Veteran Financial Expert Who Contributed to Coupang's Rapid Growth Over 9 Years
Responsible for Investment, Fund Management, and Supporting Portfolio Companies
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Altos Ventures, a venture capital (VC) firm led by CEO Kim Han-jun, announced on the 20th that it has recruited Richard Song (Korean name Song Kyung-chan), former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Coupang, as a partner to strengthen domestic investments and support invested companies.
Richard Song served as Coupang's CFO for about nine years from 2011, the year after Coupang was founded, until January of this year, contributing to the company's rapid growth including fundraising efforts. He graduated from Columbia University in the United States with a degree in Industrial Engineering and earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Richard Song is a veteran financial expert with nearly 30 years of experience, having held roles such as M&A lead and CFO at Merrill Lynch, Siemens, and Hyundai Autonet.

Altos Ventures explained that it has had a relationship with Richard Song as an investor in Coupang since 2011, and after persistent efforts by the company, he decided to join. Going forward, he will be involved not only in investment and fund management but also in assisting the finances of Altos Ventures' portfolio companies. Currently, Altos Ventures is investing in about 60 startups domestically and has recently been focusing on the consumer tech sector.
