Goheung-gun, First Shipment of New Cash Crop 'Apple Mango'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Apple mango, a subtropical fruit popular for its sweet fragrance, soft texture, and high sugar content as a well-being fruit, has been harvested for the first time in Goheung, Jeollanam-do.
According to Goheung County on the 15th, the county has established apple mango cultivation technology through over 10 years of research at the Agricultural Technology Center to develop new income crops in preparation for climate warming, achieving results in generating farm income.
Starting in 2016 as a regional brand commercialization pilot project with two farms cultivating on 4,000㎡, this year is expected to record a harvest of about 3 tons.
In particular, direct sales channels through non-face-to-face contact have been developed, and prices are formed at about 40,000 won per kg, drawing attention as a high-income crop.
Apple mango, known as the queen of tropical fruits, originates from Southeast Asia but is a crop that can be cultivated in the southern regions of Korea. It is consumed either by eating the flesh or blending it into fruit beverages.
A county official said, “Goheung region has abundant sunlight and a warm climate during winter, making it competitive for subtropical fruit cultivation. We will do our best to produce high-quality fruit with apple mango’s sweet fragrance, soft texture, and high sugar content to increase consumer satisfaction.”
