KOSPI Slightly Declines to 2170 Level Amid Institutional Net Selling... KOSDAQ Slightly Weak
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] The KOSPI is showing a slightly weak start due to net selling by institutional investors. The KOSDAQ index also edged down, retreating to the 770 level.
On the 14th, the KOSPI opened at 2,176.43, down 9.63 points (0.44%) from the previous trading day. The KOSPI, which started lower, is showing a decline of around 0.5% in the early session. As of 9:20 a.m., it was at 2,174.91, down 11.15 points (0.51%) from the previous day.
Overnight, major indices on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) showed mixed trends despite positive news related to COVID-19 vaccines, as key tech stocks plunged sharply. On the 13th (local time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,085.80, up 10.5 points (0.04%) from the previous day. The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index fell 29.82 points (0.94%) to 3,155.22, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq index plunged 226.60 points (2.13%) to 13,090.84.
Seo Sang-young, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, said, "Attention should be paid to China's import and export statistics," adding, "With ongoing frictions related to TikTok and Hong Kong, concerns over the US-China trade dispute have increased, and China's import volume from the US will be closely watched." He also noted, "Exports and imports are still expected to decline compared to last year, which is likely to dampen investment sentiment," and forecasted, "Considering these changes, the Korean stock market will likely experience high volatility in individual stocks, similar to the US market in the afternoon."
Looking at trading trends by participant, individual and foreign investors are net buyers of 93.1 billion KRW and 32.5 billion KRW respectively, while institutional investors are net sellers of 118.1 billion KRW.
By sector, pharmaceuticals, electrical and electronics, and food and beverages are rising, while machinery, medical precision instruments, and transportation equipment are falling.
Among the top market capitalization stocks, LG Household & Health Care, Samsung Biologics, Celltrion, and Samsung Electronics are rising. Conversely, NAVER, Kakao, Hyundai Mobis, and NCSoft are declining.
Currently, in the KOSPI market, 236 stocks are rising, including one stock hitting the upper price limit, 564 stocks are falling with no stocks hitting the lower price limit, and 88 stocks are unchanged.
The KOSDAQ index also showed a slightly weak trend, retreating to the 770 level. The KOSDAQ opened at 776.19, down 5.00 points (0.64%) from the previous day. In the early session, it is showing a slight decline due to institutional selling. As of 9:20 a.m., it was at 776.97, down 4.22 points (0.54%) from the previous day.
Looking at the supply and demand situation, individual investors are net buyers of 30.8 billion KRW, while institutional and foreign investors are net sellers of 23.7 billion KRW and 1.9 billion KRW respectively.
By sector, food and tobacco, information devices, and internet sectors are rising, while broadcasting services, non-metallic minerals, and semiconductors are falling.
Among the top market capitalization stocks, Genexine, Celltrion Pharm, Celltrion Healthcare, and Seegene are rising. Conversely, EcoPro BM, CJ ENM, HLB, and SK Materials are declining.
