On 'Fishermen's Day,' Seogwangjae, Wando Geumil Fisheries Cooperative President, Awarded the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit
[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] To commemorate the '9th Fisheries Day,' Seo Gwang-jae, chairman of the Wando Geumil Fisheries Cooperative, who contributed to increasing fishermen's income, will receive the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 14th that it will hold a ceremony on the 15th to present awards and decorations to meritorious persons in lieu of the 9th Fisheries Day commemorative ceremony.
Chairman Seo, who will receive the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, was recognized for increasing fishermen's income through the cooperative's net profit surplus, increased capital contributions, expansion of seaweed farming licenses, and recycling of seaweed by-products. Lee Jung-nam, chairman of the Gangwon Province Yeonseung Fishermen's Association, who contributed to the recovery of fishery resources, will receive the Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, and Kim Jae-hwan, chairman of the Guryongpo Fisheries Cooperative, who worked for fishermen's welfare and the development of the fisheries industry, will receive the Iron Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit.
Fisheries Day (April 1 every year) began as Fishermen's Day in 1969, was integrated into Farmers' Day in 1973, and was revived as Fisheries Day in 2011. Since then, according to the 'Framework Act on Fisheries and Fishing Villages Development' enacted in June 2015, the name was changed to Fisheries Day, and a government-level commemorative ceremony has been held annually. This year's ceremony, scheduled to be held in Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, was canceled to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
On this day, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries also selected a total of nine recipients for the 'Sea Planting Day' (May 10 every year) commemorative awards. Kim Dae-sung, chairman of the National Coastal Fishermen's Association, who contributed to strengthening fishery resource management through honorary monitoring of illegal fishing and implementation of the fishing gear real-name system, will receive the Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit.
