Investigation Continues for 6 Months
[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] U.S. intelligence authorities are reportedly investigating a Chinese real estate tycoon who fled to the United States. It is also known that a close aide of U.S. President Donald Trump is within the scope of the investigation.
On the 8th (local time), the U.S. daily newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating Chinese real estate tycoon Guo Wengui. The FBI is investigating Guo and the funds used for his media activities within the U.S. This investigation is also said to include work related to Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist and a close aide to President Donald Trump.
The FBI is reported to have inquired with associates about the sources of funds for media companies linked to Guo, who hired Bannon as a consultant in 2018, as well as information about his activities. Although the investigation has been ongoing for more than six months, both Guo and Bannon’s side have stated that they have not been directly contacted by the FBI.

Previously, Guo was indicted in China on charges including bribery, fraud, money laundering, kidnapping, and rape, but he denied the charges and fled overseas in 2014, applying for asylum in the United States. He posted on social network services (SNS) about corruption links between Chinese political circles and corporate elites, which reportedly drew the attention of Chinese authorities. During the Trump administration, he also received support from hardliners against China.
