The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) announced on the 8th (Korean time) that "the tournament will be held for four days starting from the 20th of next month at the Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland," and added, "Due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the event will be held without spectators." This is the first major of the LPGA Tour this year. They explained, "We are working closely with title sponsor AIG and Royal Troon Golf Club to find ways to safely conduct the tournament."

Players must test negative for COVID-19 to participate. Players and caddies will have restricted movement between the hotel and the course. Prior to the British Women's Open, the Scottish Women's Open will be held from August 13. The LPGA Tour had been completely suspended due to the impact of COVID-19 after completing the Australian Women's Open in February, but will resume starting with the newly established Drive On Championship on the 31st.
