[Test Drive] 'The Textbook of Quiet Driving' Kia K7 Hybrid
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Drivers who prioritize quiet and serene driving as their top criterion when choosing a vehicle should pay attention to hybrid sedans. Among them, the K7 Premier Hybrid, known as the textbook example of quiet driving, is a car that can easily make it to the top of the purchase list.
The K7 Premier Hybrid has been a popular model in the domestic market, selling over 12,000 units since its launch in June last year. On the 20th of last month, I personally test-drove the Premier Hybrid on a round trip of about 54 km from Seoul to Paju. The fuel efficiency recorded during the test drive was 16.9 km/ℓ, which is higher than the official fuel efficiency of 16.2 km/ℓ.
First, the vehicle’s design caught attention with its bold yet unique styling. Kia enlarged the size of the intaglio grille on the facelifted K7 Premier and applied vertical bars to create a bold and luxurious image.
The iconic Z-line shaped LED daytime running lights unique to the K7 extend from the edge of the radiator grille down to the bottom of the headlamps. The rear features a long bar-shaped rear lamp design that spans the width of the body, providing a sense of stability. The rear also incorporates the Z-line LED lamps, creating a unified look with the front.
The interior design applied a horizontal layout, giving a clean and spacious impression. Wood grain material that faithfully reproduces the texture of natural wood completed a level of luxury befitting a large sedan. The 12.3-inch large navigation screen and 12.3-inch full-color TFT LCD cluster added a sense of advanced automotive technology.
The driving experience was surprisingly smooth and quiet in electric mode only. Even when switching from electric mode to the gasoline engine or when both the motor and engine operated simultaneously, stable driving was possible with almost no difference. The K7 Premier Hybrid improved vibration and noise by expanding the application of soundproof glass compared to previous models and reinforcing the chassis.
Advanced safety technologies and convenience features were also satisfying. When the driver turns on the turn signal, the 'Blind-Spot View Monitor' displays the rear side view on the cluster (instrument panel). Lane Keeping Assist, which recognizes lanes and vehicles ahead and autonomously controls the steering wheel, and an external air intake prevention control technology that automatically closes windows and switches the air conditioning system to recirculation mode before entering tunnels or areas with unpleasant odors, are applied. Additionally, navigation-based Smart Cruise Control adjusts the speed automatically according to the speed limits of the road being driven on.
