Dadohaehaesang National Park Extends Access Ban Period for Restoration of Uido Bungsung Sand Dunes
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Tae-in] The West Office of Dadohaehaesang National Park under the Korea National Park Service (Director Lee Cheon-gyu) announced that the restricted access period for Uido Pungseong Sand Dunes, originally scheduled to end on the 15th of this month, will be extended until December 31, 2025.
Uido Pungseong Sand Dunes, located in Dochomyeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is known as a representative scenic resource of Dadohaehaesang National Park. However, due to recent environmental changes surrounding the sand dunes, erosion has accelerated and their value has declined. Since 2011, efforts have been made to restore the original form of Uido Pungseong Sand Dunes by removing factors that obstruct sand movement and monitoring topographical changes, resulting in the accumulation of sand at the dune crest.
Although removing obstacles to sand movement has led to some restoration with sand deposition at the dune crest, the deposited sand is currently not maintaining a natural balance of sediment along the slopes toward Seongchon (north side) and Donmok (south side) beaches.
In particular, the park office has identified major factors hindering the maintenance of a consistent dune height at the crest. Since resolving these issues will require considerable time, the access restriction period is being extended to allow for proper restoration of the scenic resource.
