Pohang Yeongilman Port Container 'Cargo Railroad Era' Opens... Two-Track with Trucks
Yeongilman Port Access Railway Construction Completed After Over 6 Years
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 1st, a freight train carrying containers made a powerful first departure whistle at the Yeongilman Port rail yard in Heunghae-eup, Buk-gu, Pohang City.
The construction of the Yeongilman Port inbound railway line was completed only in December last year, more than six years after it began in 2013 to ensure smooth transportation of port cargo volume. Since then, after securing container cargo volume for transportation, checking the signaling system, and inspecting detailed operations related to train operation at the rail yard, the first commercial operation started on this day.
With this first commercial train operation, the land transportation system for Yeongilman Port cargo volume will be possible not only by trucks but also by trains, which is expected to further strengthen the logistics transportation competitiveness of Yeongilman Port. It is anticipated to play a significant role when northern trade is activated in the future.
According to Pohang City, starting with this first train transportation, 40 20-foot (ft, 12 inches) containers will be transported six times a week, expecting an increase of more than 1,000 TEUs of cargo volume per month. Pohang City also stated that they are continuing consultations with major shippers and KORAIL to operate more than 20 times a week within this year.
