Qantas Airways in Australia to Cut Over 6,000 Jobs Due to COVID-19 Impact
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Qantas Airways, Australia's largest airline, announced on the 25th that it will cut more than 6,000 employees due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
According to AP News and others, Qantas Airways announced plans to reduce 6,000 employees and extend the temporary layoff period for 15,000 employees as part of cost-cutting measures. Currently, Qantas Airways has about 29,000 employees. The airline also added that it will suspend operations of 100 aircraft for more than a year and immediately retire six Boeing 747s.
Through these measures, Qantas Airways explained that it plans to save 15 billion Australian dollars (approximately 12.4 trillion Korean won) in costs over the next three years and also raise 1.9 billion Australian dollars in new funds. Qantas Airways expects domestic flights to recover to about 40% by July, while it anticipates that international flights will take some time to recover.
