JeonGyoJo Gwangju Branch Strongly Criticizes Superintendent Jang Huiguk's Family for Bribery Allegations
"Beyond Embarrassment to Betrayal..." Official Apology and Explanation Demanded
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) has urged Jang Huiguk, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, to issue an official apology and explanation regarding his family's acceptance of money and valuables.
On the 24th, the Gwangju branch of KTU stated in a press release, "Until now, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has promoted 'Clean Gwangju Education' to improve the low ranking of Gwangju education integrity, establishing a separate team and conducting various trainings and promotions, but the corruption involving the superintendent's family feels like a betrayal beyond shame."
They continued, "The provision of money and valuables by a private kindergarten principal to the superintendent's family was naturally based on the relationship with the Gwangju Superintendent of Education, who holds the authority to approve private kindergartens," adding, "This is a case of accepting money from an interested party, and such an act can only be considered an improper solicitation, making it an intolerable corruption."
They also stated, "While conflicts with private kindergartens have been ongoing, the superintendent should not stop at apologizing through interview coverage regarding this incident where his family accepted money behind the scenes," emphasizing, "He must transparently disclose the facts about any violations of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act or the Code of Conduct for Public Officials and issue an official apology."
The statement also addressed recent controversies surrounding nepotistic personnel corruption involving the superintendent's relatives.
The Gwangju branch of KTU pointed out, "While there are many cases of people wishing to transfer from Jeonnam to Gwangju, cases of transfers from Gwangju to Jeonnam are rare, making exchanges difficult," and added, "Nonetheless, the fact that the superintendent's niece-in-law, a public official, transferred from Jeonnam to Gwangju is sufficient to raise suspicions," urging a clear clarification of the facts.
