Chairman Kim attended the "Expert Roundtable for the Eradication of Child Abuse Crimes," hosted by Representative Yang Geum-hee, the United Future Party Policy Committee, and the Yeouido Research Institute at the National Assembly in the afternoon. He said, "The reality is that there are no facilities to protect children, so the state has not yet developed the capacity to protect abused children."
He expressed concern, saying, "Children are the bearers of future hope, but recently, South Korea's birth rate has been very low. Even for children already born, the foundation of the country can only be maintained if they are properly raised. However, recent incidents show that children are frequently abused by their own parents, making normal growth impossible."
Chairman Kim emphasized, "From now on, the state must increase the number of protective facilities," and requested, "Please come up with good measures on how to expand facilities that can protect children and what the government should do."
Representative Yang, who hosted the roundtable, pointed out, "Although the number of child abuse reports has doubled over the past five years, the number of specialized child protection agencies and expansion plans are grossly insufficient, and the number of experts does not meet appropriate levels. The Moon Jae-in administration claims to promote policies to prevent child abuse, but these are empty words, and they are stingy in securing the necessary budget."
Representative Yang continued, "The government focuses only on cash welfare such as child allowances, which translate into votes during elections, and seems to pay relatively less attention to child abuse, which shows results only after a long time," emphasizing, "We will continuously hold roundtables to establish protective measures for abused children."
