Hyundai Steel Introduces 'Home Run' Untact Training Program
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads and untact services are being introduced across all sectors of society, Hyundai Steel has been implementing a non-face-to-face online education program called ‘Home Learn’ since June this year.
Unlike the previous method where online lectures stored on a server were downloaded and passively attended, the newly introduced ‘Home Learn’ by Hyundai Steel is an education system that allows real-time communication with instructors. Accordingly, employees can now freely take professional courses related to their jobs, such as AI and Big Data Academy, sales negotiation skills, and manufacturing processes, not in the office but in their personal spaces, whereas these were previously conducted as in-person group training.
According to Hyundai Steel, Home Learn is one of several programs promoted to fundamentally change work practices, including minimizing face-to-face reporting, introducing flexible work systems, and improving meeting culture.
Home Learn is characterized by being conducted in real-time using the online video conferencing platform ‘Zoom.’ During sessions, instructors can share their screens, and learners can communicate one-on-one with instructors via chat.
Another feature is that learning takes place in personal spaces separated from workspaces to maximize learning effectiveness. Contrary to initial concerns that concentration might decrease during online real-time education, the pilot class conducted last month reflected opinions that concentration was higher than in group training. Additionally, the company has made laptops available for loan to learners who do not have their own devices.
In particular, unlike traditional group training, Home Learn allows efficient adjustment of learning periods and times. Trainees can adjust lecture times within a maximum of 16 hours over 2 days, with each session lasting up to 2 hours, and appropriately allocate time for lectures, practice, and breaks within that period. This has also been evaluated to reduce fatigue associated with long-duration group training.

Hyundai Steel plans to operate most of this year’s newly planned training courses, including job training, leadership development, and new employee education, which were previously conducted as group training, through the untact education program Home Learn. In addition, capable employees will be selected through applications to serve as in-house instructors and be given opportunities to actively participate.
