40s Man in Cheongju Attempts Self-Immolation Holding 22-Month-Old Baby Amid Custody Dispute
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ga-yeon] A man in his 40s who assaulted his wife over custody issues and then attempted self-immolation while holding their 22-month-old baby was rescued by the police.
According to Cheongju Heungdeok Police Station on the 18th, Mr. A (41) poured a flammable substance on himself and set himself on fire inside a vehicle parked at an intersection in Seonghwa-dong, Seowon-gu, while holding the child at around 3:33 a.m. that day.
The police, who were confronting him outside the vehicle at the time, extinguished the fire and rescued Mr. A and the baby.
Mr. A suffered second-degree burns on his upper body and was transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the baby was reported to be in no life-threatening condition.
According to the police, Mr. A had left the house with the child after arguing over custody issues with his common-law spouse, Ms. B, on that day.
Ms. B reportedly filed a police report at 2:38 a.m. that day, before the incident, stating that she was assaulted by her husband over custody issues.
When the police arrived in response to the report, Mr. A stopped his car near the Guryongsan intersection in Seonghwa-dong and poured flammable substances on himself and the car.
