Korea University Opens 3 Advanced Field Departments... Total Enrollment of 90 Students
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Korea University is establishing new departments in advanced fields to prepare for the 4th Industrial Revolution and the post-COVID-19 era.
Korea University recently proposed three new departments in future advanced fields to the Ministry of Education and, after review, received approval for a total enrollment of 90 students, the university announced on the 16th. The newly established departments are Data Science, Smart Security, and Convergence Energy Engineering, each admitting 30 students.
The Department of Data Science specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, aiming to cultivate interdisciplinary talents who create innovative technologies based on applied data science skills. The School of Smart Security plans to nurture global industry-academia-research leaders who will lead a trustworthy smart society based on security, information technology, and convergent knowledge. The Department of Convergence Energy Engineering integrates nanotechnology, information technology, and biotechnology to pioneer future energy technologies and cultivate global energy leaders equipped with human-centered design and policy capabilities.

Previously, Korea University established a contract department of Semiconductor Engineering with SK Hynix, admitting 30 students. SK Hynix provides full tuition and subsidies as scholarships. During the first and second years, students complete basic liberal arts and foundational major courses, and in the third and fourth years, they take advanced and convergent major courses, with opportunities to participate in actual research through undergraduate internships. Korea University President Jin-taek Jeong said, "To prepare for change, everyone must consider the future from their own position and build their unique competitiveness," adding, "We will become an educational institution that supports growth into future-oriented core talents needed by the new society."
