[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the afternoon of the 15th, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held a phone call at the request of Rachel Omamo, Kenya's Foreign Minister, and exchanged opinions on the response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The two ministers evaluated that through cases such as △ South Korea's humanitarian support to Kenya including diagnostic kits and masks △ Kenya's cooperation in supporting the return of South Korean nationals, they were able to reaffirm the close bilateral relationship in the process of responding to difficulties caused by COVID-19.
Minister Omamo said, "We appreciate the timely support of COVID-19 diagnostic kits and other quarantine supplies to Kenya from both the Korean government and private sector," adding, "Moreover, Korea's sharing of successful and professional COVID-19 response experiences has been very helpful to Kenya's COVID-19 response."
In response, Minister Kang said, "We plan to support African countries including Kenya to overcome COVID-19 through bilateral humanitarian aid and sharing experiences such as holding K-quarantine webinars."
Additionally, Minister Omamo mentioned that the Kenyan government is implementing social control measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and inquired about Korea's return to daily life amid the COVID-19 situation, such as school reopening. Minister Kang explained that Korea continues school attendance and operation of commercial facilities while thoroughly tracking infected individuals and adhering to hygiene rules. They also agreed to continue cooperation through international organizations such as the United Nations for the complete eradication of COVID-19 and health cooperation.
