[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), an IBT (Internet-Based Testing) method, which allows test takers who cannot take the June mock college entrance exam in classrooms to take the test online and submit their answers, will be piloted.
The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation announced on the 15th that the June mock exam for the 2021 academic year will be held on the 18th. The June mock exam will be conducted simultaneously from 8:40 a.m. at 2,061 high schools nationwide and 428 designated academies. The number of applicants for this exam is 483,286, including 416,529 current students and 66,757 graduates and other test takers. Compared to the June mock exam last year, the number of applicants decreased by 56,897.
This mock exam serves as a preparatory test for the 2021 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) scheduled for December 3, with the same nature, test areas, and number of questions. After this mock exam, improvements will be identified during the scoring process and reflected in the 2021 CSAT. The Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) CSAT-linked textbooks and linkage ratios will be provided on the day of the exam. Results will be notified to test takers on July 9.
This year, those who wish to take the exam but cannot enter the test site due to self-quarantine or other reasons can apply in advance to take the test online for each session. Unlike the existing academic assessments, test takers will access the designated website, solve the problems according to the exam schedule, and submit their answers, which will be saved on the evaluation institute’s server for scoring. Detailed information will be separately provided to test takers. The number of online test takers is about 3,000, and their scores will not be reflected in the overall results.
Furthermore, if a test taker cannot take the online test on the exam day due to fever or other symptoms, they can submit their answers online by 9 p.m. on the 19th after the test questions and provisional answers are released. Separate scores will be provided, but these will also not be included in the overall results. This testing method is designed to allow test takers to evaluate their achievement even under COVID-19 conditions, and the possibility of its adoption in the actual CSAT is very low.
The June mock exam will be conducted simultaneously with the nationwide joint academic assessment for first-year high school students in 16 provinces except Seoul. To minimize contact among students, the lunch break will be extended by 20 minutes. The start time of the exam after lunch will be delayed by 20 minutes compared to the usual schedule. The third session English test will begin at 1:30 p.m. The schedule may differ for the CSAT, and the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation will announce related details soon.
The operation of the fourth session Korean history, social/science/vocational exploration test times will be partially changed. After the Korean history test time ends, the test papers will be collected in advance, and then the exploration test papers will be distributed. Test takers who do not take the Korean history test will have their entire CSAT scores invalidated and will not receive a score report. Those who do not select an exploration subject may move to the waiting room. Each exploration subject is allotted 30 minutes of test time, and the test papers will be collected within 2 minutes after the test ends. Test takers selecting only one subject will wait for 30 minutes before taking the test. In the CSAT, test papers are not distributed in advance and are handed out by supervisors when taking the second subject.
