Assemblyman Lee Hyung-seok Holds Legislative Public Hearing on the May 18 Democratic Movement
On the 16th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, Seminar Room 1
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Representative Lee Hyung-seok (The Democratic Party of Korea, Gwangju Buk-gu Eul) announced on the 11th that he will hold a 'Legislative Public Hearing on the May 18 Democratic Movement' at the National Assembly Members' Office Building Seminar Room 1 on the 16th.
This public hearing was prepared to finally review the contents of the amendment bill of the 'Special Act on the May 18 Democratic Movement, etc. (May 18 Historical Distortion Punishment Act),' which is Representative Lee's 'No. 1 bill' and the 'No. 1 party-promoted bill' among the bills proposed by Democratic Party lawmakers from Gwangju and Jeonnam, and to further build national consensus.
At the public hearing, Professor Kim Nam-jin, Chief Researcher at the East Asia Law Center of Chonnam National University, will start with a presentation, followed by discussions from Cho Jin-tae, Executive Director of the May 18 Memorial Foundation, Professor Kim Jae-yoon of Konkuk University Law School, and Attorney Kim Jung-ho of the law firm Ewus.
The attendees will closely examine ▲ adding 'crimes against humanity' to the legal provisions to exclude the statute of limitations for crimes against humanity such as civilian massacres ▲ establishing punishment regulations for distortion and dissemination of false information about the May 18 Democratic Movement ▲ and solutions to conflicts with constitutional freedom of expression.
Representative Lee said, "Although the historical and legal evaluation of the May 18 Democratic Movement has already been completed, continuous distortion and disparagement seriously damage the honor of the victims and bereaved families," adding, "The victims are suffering increased mental pain, and some forces are using this to incite national division and politically exploit it."
He continued, "I will ensure the passage of the 'May 18 Historical Distortion Punishment Act' so that distortion and disparagement of May 18 can no longer take root in our society."
