Black Floyd Dies of Asphyxiation... Trump and Biden Clash Again
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The funeral of George Floyd, a Black man who died of asphyxiation by a white police officer, was held on the 9th (local time) in his hometown of Houston, Texas.
According to US media including the AP News Agency, the bereaved family held the funeral at a church in Houston around 11:45 a.m., attended by 500 mourners. Since his death sparked tremendous backlash against racial discrimination not only in the United States but worldwide, the funeral was broadcast live on TV and the internet with great attention. A large crowd also gathered outside the funeral hall to watch his coffin.
Floyd's final resting place was decided to be the Memorial Gardens Cemetery on the outskirts of Houston, where his late mother is buried. The city of Houston declared the day as "George Floyd Day."
US presidential candidates continued their confrontations even as Floyd's funeral was held that day. Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden launched a sharp attack on President Donald Trump through a video message at the funeral. Biden emphasized, "Now is the time to achieve racial justice," adding, "We must never again turn a blind eye to racial discrimination that pierces and wounds the soul."
Former Vice President Biden also mentioned Floyd's daughter Gianna, saying, "Her father will change the world," and "When justice is served for Floyd, we can truly embark on the path to achieving racial justice in this country."
Unlike Biden, President Donald Trump made no special remarks about Floyd's funeral that day. Instead, Trump continued the ideological debate by claiming that calls to cut police budgets due to excessive force would "only benefit robbers and rapists."
President Trump also labeled a 70-year-old man who was seriously injured after being pushed by police during a racial discrimination protest in New York State as an "Antifa" agitator.
