Jung-gu Dasan-dong Area Reborn as Rainwater Village to Restore Water Circulation
Installing Pitcher Blocks on Streets with Rainwater Storage and Rain Gardens... Preventing Flood Damage and Creating a Healthy Eco-Friendly Village through Rainwater Reuse
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seo Yang-ho) is accelerating the 'Dasan-dong Rainwater Village Creation Project' together with local residents.
The creation of the 'Rainwater Village' is a project aimed at restoring urban water circulation by infiltrating rainwater into the ground to reduce the amount discharged into the sewer system, thereby preventing flood damage and collecting rainwater for reuse. It was selected in the Seoul city public contest last December, securing a total budget of 750 million KRW, and is currently being actively promoted.
The target area of the project, around Dasan-dong, has a surface impermeability rate of over 98%, making it a region prone to concentrated flood damage during heavy rains as rainwater does not seep into the ground. The district plans to install rainwater storage tanks, automatic watering devices, and rainwater pergolas in this area, carry out rooftop greening projects using these at the community center, and install rainwater infiltration trenches 150m and 90m long respectively along the road in front of the community center and the edge of Dongho-ro 11-gil to allow rainwater to seep into the ground.
Additionally, a 250㎡ grass block parking lot, instead of concrete, will be created on part of the Dongho-ro 11-gil roadway, and small rain gardens will be scattered nearby. Furthermore, parts of Dongho-ro 11-gil and Chung-hyeon Village Yard will be renovated with permeable blocks that allow rainwater to infiltrate well. The rainwater collected in the rainwater storage tanks installed at regional hubs will be used for gardening flower beds or cleaning.
On May 25, a briefing session was held to design the optimal resident-customized Rainwater Village, fostering consensus with residents. Mayor Seo Yang-ho stated, "Once the Dasan-dong Rainwater Village is established, it will prevent chronic flood damage and transform into an eco-friendly village through healthy water circulation." He added, "It is expected to maximize synergy effects by implementing it in parallel with the 'Seonggwak Village Sewer and Road Maintenance Project,' which is part of the 'Dasan-dong Seonggwak Village Residential Environment Improvement Project' currently underway."
