'GIST Antiviral Research Center' Opens in Gwangju
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) opened an Antiviral Research Center on the 9th to actively respond to emerging viruses that cause infectious diseases.
This research center was established to quickly respond to emerging viruses that cause infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). It will focus on research related to protection against infectious disease-causing viruses, diagnosis, vaccines, and therapeutics, and plans to systematically study the life cycle of infectious disease-causing viruses as well.
The research center is organized and operated into detailed fields such as protection, diagnosis, therapeutics, vaccines, and mechanism research.

Center Director Seongkyu Park said, "The GIST Antiviral Research Center will actively conduct not only traditional research but also various issues caused by emerging viruses through interdisciplinary convergence and strategic research by field," adding, "We expect to play a proactive role in antiviral research by establishing virus research models and developing response technologies to quickly diagnose infectious diseases and further suggest treatment methods."
