Mokpo National University Selected for Si-Gun-Gu Regional Industry Development (Non-R&D) Project
Support for World-Class Welding Structure Performance in Joseon Marine Industry, Expected to Revitalize Local Economy
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Mokpo National University (President Park Min-seo) announced on the 8th that it was finally selected for the ‘2020 Si/Gun/Gu Regional Anchor Industry Promotion (Non-R&D) Project’ supported by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
The ‘Si/Gun/Gu Regional Anchor Industry Promotion (Non-R&D) Project’ is a project that discovers, fosters, and advances regional anchor industries in Si/Gun/Gu areas, supporting local SMEs in discovering and commercializing business models to contribute to regional economic revitalization through increased sales and job creation.
In this project, Mokpo National University’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation was finally selected for the task titled ‘Southwest Region Shipbuilding and Marine Industry Welding Structure Performance Top-Tier Support Project,’ and will receive a total project budget of 1.65 billion KRW, including national and local funds (Jeollanam-do), over three years from this year until 2022.
Additionally, for project operation, Mokpo National University’s Regional Innovation Center for Medium-Sized Shipbuilding Industry will lead, with joint participation from the Medium and Small Ship Launch Support Center, Marine Cable Testing and Research Center, and Jeonnam Daebul Industry-Academic Convergence Institute.
Through this project, Mokpo National University will operate various programs such as eco-friendly and general material welding technology innovation evaluation in the shipbuilding and marine industry, smart production-based product advancement, improving awareness of anchor companies, issuing certifications, prototype production, resolving technical difficulties, and providing package support for promising companies.
In particular, by supporting top-tier welding structure performance for eco-friendly and smart medium and small ship production in the southwest region, it is expected to greatly contribute to regional economic revitalization, job creation, sales increase, and process innovation.

Project leader Professor Song Chang-yong of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering stated, “Through this project, we expect new product development and improvement (advancement) of existing products in the shipbuilding and marine industry, as well as increased sales and employment inducement effects from product commercialization.” He added, “We will take the lead in advancing the structure of the eco-friendly and smart medium and small ship industry of Jeonnam anchor companies and strengthening the global commercialization capabilities of SMEs through successful project operation.”
