Gwangju City to Intensify Overnight Truck Parking Crackdown in Early Next Month
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 29th that it will conduct joint crackdowns next month with autonomous districts, the police agency, and the Freight Association to eradicate illegal overnight parking of commercial freight vehicles.
This crackdown will focus on areas vulnerable to traffic accidents within the jurisdiction, as well as areas with frequent complaints and accident-prone locations. In particular, it will concentrate on roadsides in densely populated residential areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, crosswalks, and school zones.
Gwangju City plans to conduct intensive crackdowns on illegal overnight parking not only as a one-time operation but also throughout the second half of the year, and will carry out spot checks year-round in areas expected to generate complaints.
Overnight parking of freight vehicles refers to parking in the same location for more than one hour between 12:00 AM and 4:00 AM according to relevant laws and regulations.
Vehicles caught during the crackdown will be subject to "operation suspension or fines" under the "Freight Vehicle Transportation Business Act," and vehicles from outside the jurisdiction will be referred to the relevant local government for action.
This crackdown is expected to significantly reduce traffic safety threats, noise, and exhaust caused by some large freight vehicles parking overnight.
Heo Ik-bae, Director of the Transportation and Construction Bureau of the city, said, "Although crackdowns on overnight parking of freight vehicles have been conducted for several years, the effect has not been significant," and added, "For a fundamental solution, it is necessary for freight drivers themselves to change their mindset and refrain from illegal overnight parking, and for freight transport companies to show active interest and participation."
