Severe Disciplinary Action Against Busan Transportation Corporation Executive for Repeated Sexual Harassment of Female Employees
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] A Busan Transportation Corporation executive who habitually sexually harassed female employees has been demoted.
Busan Transportation Corporation announced on the 29th that at the disciplinary committee held on the 26th, executive A was given a severe disciplinary action of demotion.
Accordingly, the corporation explained that A will be demoted by one rank for three months and receive only one-third of the basic salary.
Regarding the criticism that unlike public officials, this is a temporary demotion rather than a permanent sanction, Busan Transportation Corporation stated, “This is according to personnel regulations agreed upon with the labor union,” adding, “Although the rank will be restored after three months, there are significant disadvantages such as omission of seniority for two years and exclusion from promotion for five years.”
Executive A, who holds a manager-level position, was recently found to have habitually sexually harassed female employees during the regular comprehensive audit by Busan City.
The city audit revealed that A made sexually harassing remarks to five subordinates over several months, and the corporation also confirmed some of these facts through its own internal audit.
In response, the Busan Subway Union issued a statement on the 14th urging preventive measures, saying, “This is not an incident that occurred suddenly by chance, but in an authoritarian and closed organizational culture, incidents such as sexual harassment, abuse of power, and bullying by workplace superiors can occur at any time.”
Although A claimed there was no intent to sexually harass, the corporation suspended A from his position and referred the case to the disciplinary committee.
