Seungro Lee, Seongbuk-gu Mayor, Supports Visiting 'Everyday Social Distancing' Campaign
Listening to Residents' Difficulties on Site and Delivering Messages of Support and Comfort... District Mayor Lee Emphasizes "Urgent Need to Participate in 'Social Distancing in Daily Life' Amid COVID-19 Nth Infection from Logistics Center"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] In the ongoing situation of COVID-19 n-th wave infections, including cluster infections originating from logistics centers, Lee Seung-ro, the mayor of Seongbuk-gu, is going around every alley supporting ‘social distancing in daily life’.
On the 27th, he visited residents of Donam 1-dong and Samseon-dong, who are supporting ‘social distancing in daily life’ by directly making and delivering side dishes for low-income and elderly single-person households in the area.
Residents of Donam 1-dong and Samseon-dong frequently make and deliver side dishes for elderly single-person households in the area who cannot use senior centers or welfare centers due to COVID-19, encouraging participation in ‘social distancing in daily life’ and alleviating loneliness.
On the 27th, Donam 1-dong held an event to make cucumber kimchi using cucumbers donated by residents Song Dae-ho and Choi Su-jeong to share with elderly single-person households and marginalized neighbors. Lee Seung-ro, the mayor of Seongbuk-gu, rolled up his sleeves saying he would show his ‘Lee Jang-geum’ cooking skills and joined in, bringing smiles to the residents.
A resident who participated said, “With trust that the district office, community center, and health center are responding quickly and meticulously to COVID-19, we residents felt that we must personally take care of and embrace our neighbors, which led to starting the side dish sharing volunteer work.” She added, “Having the mayor come directly to help and support the volunteer work made us think more carefully about social distancing in daily life and put it into practice.”
On the same day in Samseon-dong, the Saemaeul Women’s Association harvested young radish greens they grew themselves and made kimchi to deliver to elderly single-person households in the area. When Mayor Lee Seung-ro saw the young radish greens and said, “They are especially fresh, perhaps because they were grown with hope and support to overcome COVID-19,” the residents of Samseon-dong responded with thumbs up. The mayor also suggested, “It’s tough for everyone, but let’s endure it once for the health of all,” and the residents replied, “Yes, let’s do that,” creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Grandmother Han*ja (71), who received the young radish kimchi grown and made by Samseon-dong residents, said, “The welfare center where I used to have lunch every day is closed, so it was difficult to have meals and I felt lonely, but I was grateful when neighbors brought freshly made kimchi.” She added, “Everyone is having a hard time, so I am refraining from going out and washing my hands thoroughly to contribute even a little.”
Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu said, “Although everyone is tired and struggling due to COVID-19, I think the act of embracing and supporting neighbors is the true driving force behind K-quarantine.” He conveyed a message of encouragement, saying, “I hope everyone who eats the cucumber kimchi and young radish kimchi filled with neighbors’ love and hope for overcoming COVID-19 stays healthy.”
