"Passage of Hong Kong Security Law Reflects China's Determination to Defend Sovereignty"
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] Despite criticism and attacks from foreign powers, China’s passage of the draft Hong Kong National Security Law (Hong Kong Security Law) reflects the strong will to safeguard sovereignty, according to assessments within China.
China’s state-run Global Times reported on the 29th regarding the passage of the Hong Kong Security Law, stating, "At the closing meeting of the National People's Congress, the first important step was taken by passing the draft of the Hong Kong Security Law. The next step is to finalize and implement the details of the law." It added, "The passage of the Hong Kong Security Law reflects the strong will of the Chinese government and people to protect sovereignty."
The newspaper cited Lau Siu-kai, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong and Macao Research Association, saying, "The overwhelming approval of the Hong Kong Security Law shows that no matter how many measures the U.S. government takes, the position and decisions of the Chinese government will not change." He explained, "There will be a price to pay for the passage of the bill, but China holds a firm stance in handling the Hong Kong issue."
The Global Times, in a separate editorial, stated, "Foreign forces challenging China will face even greater difficulties ahead," and added, "China should not fear the U.S. public opinion war. The U.S. may wage a fiercer war against China, but the damage will be less than it was one to two years ago."
It also assessed, "Premier Li Keqiang’s calm responses to questions about China’s foreign relations at the press conference following the closing of the National People's Congress reflect China’s harmony-focused mindset and confidence in steady growth."
