Construction of 'Eungbong Neighborhood Park Forest Library' at Maebongsan, Seongdong-gu
Library Aiming to Open in August with Nature-Friendly Design, Offering Diverse Spaces for Reading and Community Activities
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) is creating the ‘Eungbong Neighborhood Park Forest Library,’ where people of all ages can read books and heal in nature at the park, utilizing idle space within Maebongsan, aiming to open in August this year.
This project was selected in last year’s Seoul city public contest and is being carried out with a budget of 1.74 billion KRW from special adjustment grants. It is located in Eungsong Neighborhood Park in Oksu-dong near Dongho Elementary School, covering a total floor area of 378㎡, with the detailed design completed in February.
Using the park’s 15m slope, the underground first floor will house public restrooms, and the ground floor will be the forest library. The design minimizes terrain damage and features a two-story structure harmonizing the building with the surrounding nature through a planting plan.
Considering the indoor lighting environment, windows are installed at a high position, and the interior structure, including columns and roof, is made of wood. Eco-friendly finishing materials are used to create a warm and stable space.
Additionally, various experiential and learning spaces for children will be created, along with a book caf? where visitors can enjoy tea, read, or chat, making it a community space for local residents.
A district official stated, “The existing park walking paths and the library are naturally connected so that anyone can use it easily. A resting area will also be created in front of the library building’s yard, allowing outdoor relaxation and small-scale events.”
