Naju City-Wonkwang University Hold Academic Forum to Reexamine Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) announced on the 28th that it held an academic forum for the "Reexamination of the Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution" at the Naju Villera Culture Center Small Theater on the 27th in collaboration with Wonkwang University (President Park Maeng-su).
The academic forum was organized as part of the implementation of the agreement following the "Memorandum of Understanding for Establishing the Status of Naju Donghak and Improving Korea-Japan Relations," signed on October 30 last year between the city, Wonkwang University, and the Korea-Japan Donghak Pilgrimage Citizens Exchange Association.
Through the forum, the city reviewed the achievements so far in collecting, researching, and analyzing domestic and international cultural heritage materials related to the Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution and shared future plans to reexamine its history.
The forum, titled "Reexamination of the Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution Forum ? For the Construction of Global Civic Publicness," was conducted in three parts: Part 1 opening ceremony, Part 2 keynote presentations, and Part 3 discussions and Q&A.
This forum featured active discussions on how to recognize and organize the Donghak Peasant Revolution within Naju studies, research plans for the Donghak Peasant Revolution jointly promoted by civic groups from Korea and Japan and the city, and the construction of a memorial tower.
Mayor Kang In-gyu said, "Just as the Donghak Peasant Army earnestly cried out dreaming of a new world, today we gather at the historic site of Naju to create new history. We will do our best to ensure that the Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution does not remain merely in the past but establishes its historical identity as a part of Naju studies and develops into a sustainable future history."
Meanwhile, this year, the city plans to promote active civic exchanges between Korea and Japan by publishing a collection of materials on the Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution with Wonkwang University, hosting an international Korea-Japan academic conference, and facilitating visits by Korea-Japan exchange delegations.
