Sports Team Coach Extorts 10 Million Won from Prot?g? over 3 Years... Sentenced to Prison
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Juhee] A school sports coach who extorted more than 10 million won over three years from his own student was sentenced to prison.
The Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 4 (Judge Lee Heonsuk) announced on the 28th that A (35), who was charged with extortion, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison.
The court stated, "The defendant regularly took money from the victim over 200 times, with the amount exceeding 10 million won. Nevertheless, he denies the crime and has made no restitution." It added, "This likely caused significant physical and mental suffering to the victim. It also likely had a negative impact on the victim's proper personal development."
A was a coach for a middle and high school sports team in Daejeon. In June 2014, he extorted 20,000 won from B, a second-year middle school athlete at the time, and after B entered high school, he continued to extort approximately 10 million won over about 200 occasions, leading to his prosecution.
It was confirmed that B even worked night shifts unloading and loading parcels to gather money to give to A.
A was also investigated for sending messages to the victim asking, in effect, "When will you receive your salary?" after introducing him to a restaurant job.
B reportedly testified that he was scared because "(A) has tattoos on his body."
