80 District Heads and Senior Officials Donate 27.8 Million Won in Emergency Disaster Relief Fund... Purchases Made at Traditional Markets and Social Enterprises with Donations... Kits Created and Delivered to Vulnerable Groups... 375 Kits Including 'Delicious Kits' and 'Social Enterprise Kits' Produced... Promoting Economic Revitalization and Resident Welfare
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Employees of Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Cha Hyun-il) donated 27.8 million won from the emergency disaster relief fund with hopes of overcoming COVID-19, purchasing goods at local stores to deliver to vulnerable groups, thereby revitalizing the local economy.
As COVID-19 prolonged, small business owners faced economic crises due to decreased sales, but with the government’s emergency disaster relief fund being distributed, the local economy is gradually regaining vitality.
Accordingly, 80 executives at grade 5 and above, including Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Cha Hyun-il, united to donate 27.8 million won from the emergency disaster relief fund.
This focused on the purpose of the emergency disaster relief fund to promote economic recovery and stabilize livelihoods. Rather than a simple cash donation, it connects donation and consumption to activate the local economy, supporting vulnerable groups and establishing a social safety net.
According to the Bank of Korea, the Consumer Sentiment Index in May, when the emergency disaster relief fund was distributed, rose by 6.8 points from the previous month to 77.6. This was the first rebound after a continuous decline since February.
The district paid attention to the influence of the emergency disaster relief fund indicated by the survey results. Accordingly, it aims to increase small business sales through the emergency disaster relief fund and support vulnerable groups with purchased goods, promoting ‘co-prosperity.’
The district used the 27.8 million won donated by employees to consume at local traditional markets and social enterprises, producing △ 290 “Delicious Kits” (food items) △ 75 social enterprise kits (goods) △ 10 daily necessities kits for vulnerable groups.
The “Delicious Kits” contained food items such as glutinous rice, ramen, red pepper paste, soybean paste, and canned tuna purchased from traditional markets, while the “Social Enterprise Kits” included specialty products such as brown rice nurungji (scorched rice), cookies, nuts, fair trade coffee and chocolate, and eco-friendly soap.
The 375 kits produced with employees’ donations are scheduled to be delivered to vulnerable groups in the district through the Yeongdeungpo-gu Social Welfare Council starting from the 28th.
On the 26th, Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Cha Hyun-il visited traditional markets, social enterprises, and alley shops to purchase various daily necessities with the emergency disaster relief fund and decided to donate them to neighbors in need through the Yeongdeungpo-gu Social Welfare Council.
Additionally, in April, Mayor Cha Hyun-il donated 30% of his salary for four months from March to June to Good Neighbors to share the pain of residents caused by the spread of COVID-19.
