Environmental Cleanup of Street Vendors in Yeonsinnae, Eunpyeong-gu
Step-by-step maintenance of a total 930m around Yeonsinnae... Street maintenance to secure pedestrian rights for residents
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) has been conducting a special cleanup of street vendors (nojeom) and illegal merchandise storage on sidewalks in the Yeonsinnae area from May 25 to December as part of the ‘Successful Yeonsinnae Street Vendor Environment Improvement Project.’
This special cleanup team consists of two squads with a total of nine members, focusing on illegal street vending activities and excessive merchandise storage in front of stores (expanding their space), which obstruct pedestrian traffic. The administration plans to concentrate its efforts on street maintenance to secure the pedestrian rights of residents, which have been severely infringed upon.
Before the cleanup, on the 7th, the district held a meeting with related parties including the president of the Yeonseo Market Merchants Association and the street vendor (nojeom) president to discuss coexistence measures and proposed a tripartite coexistence agreement among the stores, street vendors, and Eunpyeong-gu.
The special cleanup covers a total of 930 meters in the Yeonsinnae area, divided into ▲Section 1: 240m (Tongil-ro 850 to Yeonseo-ro 257, Yeonseo Market pedestrian path section) ▲Section 2: 270m (from the fruit store to Bulgwang district) ▲Section 3: 160m (Beomseo Shopping to the butcher convenience store) ▲Section 4: 260m (Yeonsinnae Exit 6 to the bus stop). From the 11th, for two weeks, enforcement notices were distributed in advance to street vendors and stores, guiding administrative supervision and voluntary cleanup.
The district is focusing administrative resources on resolving street maintenance issues related to residents’ safe pedestrian complaints, complaints from stores, and odor complaints from street vendors, and plans to continue administrative enforcement until June 8.
On the first day of the special cleanup, a resident of Eunpyeong-gu said, “The smell was so bad that I didn’t want to walk on this street, but with the staff cleaning on such a hot day, it’s very clean and nice.”
Another resident commented, “Stores had placed parasols and merchandise on the sidewalk, making walking difficult, but after the cleanup, the pedestrian path is wide open and much better.” They also expressed gratitude for the staff’s hard work despite the heat.

Mayor Kim Mi-kyung stated, “To secure sustainable pedestrian rights in Yeonsinnae by the end of this year, we plan to actively promote the 2020 Yeonsinnae Street Vendor Environment Improvement Project. If Yeonsinnae stores and street vendors (nojeom) each make small concessions, we can create a beautiful street where everyone can walk together.”
