The Tripartite Commission Begins Full-Scale Discussion on Employment Insurance Enrollment Plans for Delivery Platform Workers
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The Digital Transformation and Future of Labor Committee, a subcommittee under the Economic, Social and Labor Council, launched the "Digital Platform Labor: Delivery Sector Subcommittee" on the 27th.
This subcommittee was established to discuss protection measures for workers in the delivery platform industry. The subcommittee will primarily focus on expanding workers' compensation insurance coverage and enrolling delivery workers in employment insurance to address gaps in social insurance.
As safety accident issues among delivery workers, estimated to number between 50,000 and 100,000 nationwide, have emerged, the need to expand social safety nets such as social insurance has been raised. As of the end of April this year, the number of motorcycle traffic accident fatalities increased by 13%, from 131 to 148 compared to the same period last year.
The subcommittee will also discuss effective measures to prevent accidents among delivery workers and ways to create a fair industrial ecosystem in the delivery industry.
Park Chan-im, Senior Research Fellow at the Korea Labor Institute, will serve as the chairperson of the subcommittee.
