[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Two 12th-grade high school students in Incheon have tested positive for COVID-19 in connection with a private academy instructor. As a result, the schools these students attend and two nearby high schools switched to remote classes instead of in-person attendance.
Incheon City announced on the 20th that two 12th-grade students, including A (18), who visited a karaoke room on the 2nd floor of the Vision Plaza building in Yonghyeon-dong, Michuhol-gu on the 6th, tested positive for COVID-19.
This karaoke room was previously visited on the 6th by a private academy instructor B (25, Incheon case No. 102), who had visited Itaewon clubs, along with B’s student (12th grader, Incheon case No. 119) and the student’s friend (Incheon case No. 122).
A and others, who reside in Michuhol-gu, are friends attending Inhang High School. After receiving a notification text sent by Incheon City, they went to a public health center on the 19th for testing and were confirmed positive for COVID-19 on the same day.
Accordingly, the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education ordered Inhang High School and nearby Jeongseok Aviation High School and Inha University Affiliated High School to conduct remote classes instead of attending school that day.
Do Seong-hoon, Superintendent of Education in Incheon, stated, "In-person classes can only be possible when students and staff are safe from COVID-19," and added, "We decided to extend remote classes prioritizing student safety and health."
The Incheon Office of Education had previously advised 12th-grade students who visited the PC room and karaoke room where confirmed cases occurred to refrain from attending school through a safety notification text the day before.
As of the morning of the same day, the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases among visitors to the karaoke room increased to seven. Including confirmed cases from the PC room on the 12th floor of the same building, a total of eight confirmed cases have been reported in this building.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters suggested that infection might have spread through the elevator in this building, which houses multiple businesses, and recommended that those who visited the building on the 6th get tested at their local public health centers.
The private academy instructor B, who tested positive after visiting Itaewon clubs from the 1st to the 3rd, was reported to Incheon City for violating the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act after hiding his occupation and providing false information about his movements during the initial epidemiological investigation by health authorities.
