[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), stated that international solidarity is necessary for the safe hosting of the Tokyo Olympics next year.
According to major foreign media on the 17th (local time), Director-General Tedros said, "It will not be easy for the Olympics held after the pandemic (global outbreak of infectious disease) to be a safe international event," and emphasized, "If we do our best, especially if countries unite as one and the international community shows solidarity, it is possible."
He also mentioned, "I hope Tokyo becomes a place where humanity that has overcome COVID-19 gathers."
Thomas Bach, President of the IOC, said, "At this moment, no one can give a reliable answer about how the world will look in July next year." He added, "It is too early to start considering other scenarios and what will be needed to ensure a safe environment for all participants at that time."
