Assemblyman Jeong Muchang's Proposed 'Automobile Mileage Operation Ordinance' Passed
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The "Gwangju Metropolitan City Automobile Mileage Operation Ordinance" proposed by Jeong Mu-chang, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party of Korea·Gwangsan 2), passed the plenary session of the 289th extraordinary meeting on the 15th.
Councilor Jeong Mu-chang said, "Air pollution has deeply affected our lives to the extent that it is included as a national disaster," and added, "I proposed the ordinance to encourage citizens to voluntarily reduce their automobile mileage and contribute to improving air pollution."
The automobile mileage support ordinance was enacted to reduce fine dust and greenhouse gases, contribute to improving air pollution, and promote substantial energy-saving policies by integrating and operating the carbon point system program managed by the Korea Environment Corporation.
Additionally, incentives will be provided to vehicles that reduce their mileage, calculated based on the reduction rate or reduction amount, with 1 mileage point equivalent to 1 won given to participating citizens.
The main contents of the ordinance include ▲establishing and implementing an automobile mileage operation plan annually ▲calculating the reduction rate or reduction amount based on the standard mileage and verified mileage, and providing incentives corresponding to automobile mileage in cash or via the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card ▲the mayor developing and managing the operation system for the smooth operation of the automobile mileage system, with provisions allowing integration and operation with the carbon point system program managed by the Korea Environment Corporation.
Councilor Jeong Mu-chang stated, "Ultrafine dust and other air pollutants threaten citizens' health, and a significant portion of these pollutants originates from the transportation sector," adding, "Once the ordinance is implemented, it will reduce the generation of air pollutants through the actual reduction of automobile operation volume, so I ask for active promotion by Gwangju City and the interest and participation of citizens."
