Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Announces 16 Projects in 6 Fields of 'Challenge Track' Starting from the 18th
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 17th that it will promote the 'Challenge Track' starting this year and will announce 16 tasks across 6 projects from the 18th to next month’s 16th. The Challenge Track refers to tasks within existing industry-specific research and development (R&D) projects that have high industrial impact and challenge.
This year, the Ministry plans to support about 11 billion KRW for 16 tasks in 6 industries including semiconductors, displays, bio, machinery, robotics, and knowledge services under the Challenge Track.
Since last year, the Ministry has been striving to discover and nurture future leading industries through the 'Alchemist Project.' Feeling the need to identify challenging tasks within industry-specific R&D projects, the Challenge Track was also initiated.
In semiconductors, support will be provided for projects such as 'Development of the world's first commercialization technology for atomic-level etching equipment' and 'Development of Korea’s first commercialization technology for AI-based automotive application processors (AP).'
The Ministry expects that developing commercialization technology for atomic-level etching equipment, essential for manufacturing ultra-fine semiconductors, will double the productivity of memory semiconductors below 10 nanometers.
For displays, projects such as 'Development of the world's first process technology for ultra-high-resolution displays' and 'Development of device manufacturing technology for ultra-low power organic light-emitting diode (OLED)' will be promoted.
Successful development of device technology is expected to improve the lifespan of displays used in wearable devices.
The Ministry judged that it is the government's role to share the initial risks associated with challenges.
An official from the Ministry said, "Along with the newly announced Alchemist Project on the 6th, we plan to actively support the Challenge Track to spread challenging R&D throughout industrial technology R&D."
