Supreme Court Begins Selection Process for Successor to Justice Kwon Soon-il
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The selection process for the successor to Supreme Court Justice Kwon Soon-il, who will retire on September 8, has begun.
According to the legal community on the 15th, the Supreme Court will receive nominations for candidates to succeed Justice Kwon from both inside and outside the judiciary between the 22nd and 28th of this month.
Once the nomination process is complete, the Supreme Court will disclose the list of nominees who have agreed to be evaluated, along with their educational background, major career achievements, assets, military service, and other relevant information on its website to gather public opinions.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee will review the nominees and select at least three candidates deemed suitable to recommend to the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice will then recommend one of these candidates to the President for appointment as a Supreme Court Justice.
A Supreme Court official stated, "The Supreme Court Justice appointment process will be conducted transparently while collecting diverse opinions from various sectors of society."
The Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee is also undergoing its formation process.
The committee consists of 10 members, including the senior Supreme Court Justice, the head of the Court Administration Office, the Minister of Justice, and the President of the Korean Bar Association.
Notably, a 'non-Supreme Court judge member' will participate in the committee as a judicial member. Previously, only chief judges participated.
