Gyeonggi-do Designates Three New Cultural Properties Including 'Songgok Jobokyang-Related Ancient Documents'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has designated three items as cultural assets: old documents related to Songgok Jo Bok-yang, a Joseon Dynasty official; the 'Gangmae Stone Bridge' built over Changneung Stream in Goyang; and the 'Stone Seated Buddha Statue' of Mireuksa Temple in Yangpyeong.
Jo Bok-yang was an official during the reigns of King Injo to King Hyeonjong in the Joseon Dynasty and advocated for the Daedong Law for the people.
The old documents designated as cultural assets this time are four items donated by Jo Bok-yang's descendants to the Hwaseong Local Museum: ▲Baekpae ▲Hongpae ▲Byeolgeummungi ▲Jeungsigyoji.
Baekpae is Jo Bok-yang's certificate of passing the Jinsa examination in 1633, and Hongpae is the certificate of passing the civil service examination (Daegwa) in 1638, documents that prove his start as a civil official.
Byeolgeummungi is a document written during a celebration in 1638 for Jo Bok-yang's success in the state examination, in which he gifted property to relatives, and it is evaluated as showing part of the customs related to passing the state examination at that time.
The Gangmae Stone Bridge is a stone bridge located over Changneung Stream in Gangmae-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang City, built in 1920.
The province explained that the craftsmanship stands out by applying wooden construction methods to stone, cutting and fitting stones as if laying a well-floor (a floor woven in the shape of the Chinese character '井').
The Stone Seated Buddha Statue of Mireuksa Temple in Yangpyeong is a stone Buddha made in the form of a large 3-meter-high pillar-like body wearing a 'Bogae' (a cover over the Buddha's head).

This stone Buddha is recognized for its academic value as it shows that the Mireuk faith, which was popular during the Joseon Dynasty, flourished not only in Anseong and Icheon but also in the Yangpyeong area of the Gyeonggi region.
