Agreed to Exempt Quarantine Measures for Arrivals Between England and France for One Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The United Kingdom and France have agreed not to impose quarantine measures on travelers entering from each other's countries.
According to Sky News on the 11th (local time), the two governments announced this mutual agreement in a joint statement released the previous day. The statement said, "All measures taken by both sides must be introduced under agreement and on a reciprocal basis."
The UK Prime Minister's Office stated, "At this stage, there are no plans to impose quarantine measures on travelers coming from France."
The two countries plan to form a working group composed of officials to continue discussions in the future.
However, the UK is expected to implement quarantine measures for travelers arriving from countries other than France. Earlier, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced in a public address just before the joint statement that quarantine measures would soon be introduced for those entering the UK by air. Incoming travelers are expected to provide their UK address at the airport and undergo a 14-day quarantine.
France also announced the possibility of introducing new quarantine measures for travelers entering the country. It explained that even if quarantine measures are introduced, they will not immediately apply to European Union (EU) member states or UK nationals.

Since the UK and France have introduced quarantine measures for incoming travelers rather late, it is expected to be difficult for these measures to have a substantial effect. The cumulative COVID-19 death tolls in the UK and France are approximately 31,000 and 26,000 respectively, ranking second and fifth highest worldwide.
