Jeonbuk Research Institute Publishes Gunsan Port Response Strategy on Introduction of Safe Freight Rates for Cargo Trucks
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Tae-in] The Jeonbuk Research Institute (Director Kim Seon-gi) announced on the 11th that it published an issue briefing titled "Response Strategy of Gunsan Port to the Introduction of the Cargo Truck Safety Freight Rate System" (Issue No. 219) and proposed a response strategy for Gunsan Port in accordance with the cargo truck safety freight rate system implemented from this year.
The cargo truck safety freight rate guarantees appropriate freight charges to cargo truck owners to prevent overwork, speeding, and overloading, ensuring traffic safety. It is a minimum freight rate applied first to container cargo and cement cargo.
There has been a tendency to prefer large ports such as Busan Port and Gwangyang Port, but with the introduction of the safety freight rate system, export/import cargo in Jeonbuk Province is expected to gain competitiveness in using Gunsan Port, the region's only export/import gateway.
Countries with significant trade with Jeonbuk Province include China, Japan, and Vietnam. Fortunately, routes between these regions are already established at Gunsan Port, so it is necessary to strategically attract Jeonbuk Province cargo that previously used other ports.
Analysis of Jeonbuk Province's export/import origin-destination data shows that although routes are established at Gunsan Port, about 50,000 TEU of cargo still use Busan Port and Gwangyang Port.
Dr. Na Jeong-ho (Industrial Economy Research Department) stated, "The introduction of the cargo truck safety freight rate system presents opportunities such as attracting regional export/import cargo that uses other ports, revitalizing the local economy through the use of Gunsan Port by regional cargo, and the possibility of opening new routes due to increased cargo volume at Gunsan Port. However, threats coexist, including rising logistics costs, competition to retain Jeonbuk cargo at other ports, and limited effects of the system in regions without established routes at Gunsan Port." He emphasized that strategic responses are urgently needed for the sustainable development of Gunsan Port.

Furthermore, to attract Jeonbuk Province's export/import cargo to Gunsan Port, it was proposed to actively target "Jeonbuk Province export/import cargo," which has a high potential for attraction to Gunsan Port, support cooperative models in the social economy sector considering cargo truck transport characteristics, and, in the long term, promote the opening of new routes to Southeast Asia and other regions if cargo volume at Gunsan Port increases.
