Virus Detected in Semen of COVID-19 Patients
Researchers Need Further Study on Virus Transmission and Sexual Transmission Potential
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Young-shin] Chinese medical staff have discovered genetic material of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the semen of COVID-19 patients, according to a report by the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 8th.
According to SCMP, medical staff at Xiangchu Municipal Hospital in Henan Province, China, detected the virus in the semen of 6 out of 38 COVID-19 patients. While the COVID-19 virus has previously been detected in human saliva, urine, and feces, this is the first time it has been found in semen. This study was published in the American medical journal 'JAMA Network Open.'
The medical staff explained that considering the limited sample size, further research is needed regarding the possibility of sexual transmission. They stated, "If it is proven that the COVID-19 virus can be sexually transmitted, it could become an important part of prevention," adding, "We are particularly noting the fact that the virus was detected in the semen of recovering patients."
SCMP also conveyed experts' views that the widespread presence of the virus in semen does not necessarily mean it can be sexually transmitted. They explained that other viruses such as Ebola and Zika have also been found in male semen.
