Mapo-gu Installs Detour Connection Deck at Seongseo Middle School
Residents Crossing Playground Due to Lack of Proper Path Resolved... 123m Extension, Less Than 8% Slope Barrier-Free Deck Road... Residents Highly Satisfied
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) recently completed the installation of a connecting deck bypassing Seongseo Middle School, allowing residents of the nearby Seongsan 1-dong to move more safely and conveniently.
The area around Seongseo Middle School was a place where local residents frequently crossed the school playground to get around due to the characteristics of the area. Residents had to move according to the school playground’s opening hours, which was inconvenient, and there were concerns about student safety accidents within the school.
Accordingly, in February last year, Mapo-gu requested partial use of the school grounds from the Western Education Support Office for the installation of the connecting deck bypassing Seongseo Middle School, and in April, obtained permission to use the school grounds, securing the site for construction.
Afterward, the district requested construction subsidies from the Seoul Metropolitan Government to secure the budget and began the connecting deck construction in January this year.
After about four months of construction, the recently unveiled connecting deck is 123 meters long and 1800 mm wide, with a slope of less than 8% throughout (meeting the standards for facilities for the disabled), making it accessible without burden for the elderly, disabled, stroller users, and other vulnerable pedestrians.
Also, stairs were installed in the middle section so that residents can move without having to use the entire long ramp, maximizing convenience for all residents.
This deck road allows movement without passing through the Seongseo Middle School playground by using the bypass connecting deck, which is expected to contribute to the satisfaction of nearby residents and the prevention of student safety accidents.
Im Jeongmi (55), a resident living nearby, said, “Whenever I had to go out from home toward the library, I always had to use the school playground and the distance was longer, so I am very satisfied that this path has been created.”
In fact, residents behind Seongseo Middle School can now move more safely and easily to convenience facilities such as Mapo Central Library, Seongsan 1-dong Community Center, and bus stops.
