This inspection was carried out in response to over 50 earthquakes that occurred over nine days from the magnitude 1.8 earthquake on the 26th of last month, located 21 km northwest of Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, until the 4th of this month.
Since Haenam has never experienced an earthquake since the Korea Meteorological Administration began instrumental observations in 1978, this was a prompt response to growing concerns and anxiety among parents and residents regarding school facilities.
The inspection focused on schools in Sanim-myeon and Hwawon-myeon, the epicenter areas, to assess the seismic resistance status of all school buildings in Haenam.
The inspection confirmed that there was no damage to schools caused by this earthquake; however, it was judged that continuous preparedness is necessary as earthquakes may continue.
In particular, for aging buildings and those lacking seismic resistance, facilities will be reinforced through close consultation with the Jeollanam-do Office of Education, and additional measures against earthquakes will be continuously developed, including earthquake evacuation drills after students return to normal attendance.
Superintendent Jang Seok-woong instructed the Office of Education’s facilities department and staff to be sent to schools in the earthquake-affected areas to conduct safety inspections and prepare so that students can attend school and study without anxiety after COVID-19.
