View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) is operating non-face-to-face programs to alleviate the emotional isolation of culturally vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with disabilities, amid the temporary suspension of lifelong education programs at welfare facilities due to COVID-19.
Instructors and staff from various fields who used to teach at elderly and disabled welfare facilities have created and distributed 43 mini video lectures, including health programs such as ▲Power Yoga Dance ▲TheraBand Gymnastics ▲Foot Massage, and lifelong education programs such as ▲Ukulele ▲Minyo Janggu (traditional Korean drum) ▲History Classes ▲Beginner Smartphone courses.
The video lectures will be available from May 1. Lectures of about 5 to 10 minutes will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube, blogs, etc., and links will be sent to users, who can listen via mobile phones, computers, and other devices.
Additionally, 18 courses such as English, Chinese, and adult literacy, which allow for homework, will provide worksheets once or twice a week, and instructors will conduct non-face-to-face checks and guidance on the worksheets.
Furthermore, to promote emotional stability and relieve stress for the elderly and disabled whose outdoor activities are restricted due to COVID-19, new home-based programs will be developed and operated, including art activities using coloring books, flower pot cultivation, indoor gardening, and worry-relief doll making.
Dobong-gu has one municipal Dobong Senior Welfare Center, four district senior welfare centers by region (Ssangmun-dong, Banghak-dong, Chang-dong, Dobong-dong), and one comprehensive welfare center for the disabled. Even during closures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, efforts are being made to manage the physical and mental health of vulnerable groups through alternative meal distribution and welfare check-in phone services.
