[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] A special school for students with intellectual disabilities will be established in the eastern region of Seoul (Dongdaemun and Jungnang Districts). This area was the only part of Seoul without a special school, and parents had strongly demanded its establishment.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and Jungnang District Office announced on the 27th that they will establish the special school "Dongjin School" in Sinnae-dong, Jungnang District. Dongjin School will accommodate 111 students across 18 classes, from kindergarten to high school, for students with intellectual disabilities. After establishing the basic project plan within this year, and upon completion of the feasibility study and investment review next year, the design phase will begin in 2022, followed by construction starting in 2023. The school aims to open in September 2024.
The complex facility built alongside Dongjin School will also be available for use by local residents. It will include a swimming pool, community center, and lifelong education gymnasium, spanning one basement floor and three above-ground floors.

The Office of Education had been promoting the establishment of Dongjin School since 2012 but faced difficulties due to opposition from residents. Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, stated, "We will cooperate with the residents of Jungnang District so that Dongjin School can serve as an innovative educational space in Seoul that coexists with all community members." Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang District, said, "We expect it to become a complex cultural space for the eastern region, not only for special education."
