KISA to Implement 'Level 2 Numeric Domain' Registration Starting Next Month 1st
Resident Registration Number, Passport Number, etc. Cannot Be Registered
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced on the 31st that it will implement the registration of second-level numeric domains starting from 10 a.m. on April 1.
Second-level domains are domains without intermediate levels such as '.co', '.go', '.or'. They can be registered within a range of 3 to 63 characters, such as '118.kr' or '118.hanguk'. The principle of 'first-come, first-served' applies, meaning that the person who first submits the domain name registration application to each country domain registrar will be registered regardless of trademark ownership.
However, considering privacy infringement and personal information protection, registration of unique identification information such as ▲someone else's phone number ▲resident registration number ▲passport number is not allowed. Also, special phone numbers operated by government or public institutions, such as the 11Y series (excluding 115) including 112 and 119, the 12Y and 13YY (including 13Y) series, and numbers like 107, 182, and 188 can only be registered by the respective institutions.

Before introducing numeric domains, KISA gave priority registration opportunities starting December 1 last year to customer center phone numbers (100, 101, 105, 106) of the three major domestic mobile carriers and numeric trademark holders. Joon-sang Cho, Director of KISA's Internet Infrastructure Division, said, "In the second half of the year, we plan to hold events targeting second-level numeric domain registrants and strengthen promotional activities together with registrars."
