Establishing International Standards and Ultra-Collaboration... SK Telecom Strengthens Quantum Leadership
[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] With the quantum cryptography communication technology proposed by SK Telecom becoming an international standard, South Korea is now able to take the lead in revitalizing the quantum ecosystem.
According to SK Telecom on the 31st, at the ITU-T meeting held online last week, the technical report related to 'Security considerations for quantum key distribution network' proposed by SK Telecom was finally approved as an international standard (TR.sec-qkd). ITU-T, which sets standards in the telecommunications field, is a subsidiary organization of ITU, the world's leading international organization for telecommunications.
The standard approved for SK Telecom covers security considerations to be taken into account when applying quantum key distribution technology to communication networks. SK Telecom established global criteria regarding the security requirements necessary when transmitting quantum keys between communication points located far apart, as well as the security levels required for communication points managing quantum key distribution.
This standard approval is significant in that it enables South Korea to contribute to the activation of the quantum ecosystem at a time when governments and companies worldwide have high interest in adopting quantum cryptography communication. Kim Yoon, head of SK Telecom's AIX Center, said, "The adoption of this standard is the result of SK Telecom's long-term efforts in research and development of quantum cryptography communication technology to provide secure 5G services," adding, "We will continue to lead the activation of the quantum ecosystem through global standard development and ultra-collaboration, strengthening quantum leadership."

Since early this month, SK Telecom has also started ultra-collaboration related to quantum technology with global telecom companies within the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), including Telecom Italia and Ericsson. The results of this collaboration will be published later as a white paper.
