Baemin "Trust Our Food Reviews"... War Against Illegal Reviews
Suspicious Company Writing Paid Fake Reviews Caught... To Be Reported to Police
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Woowa Brothers, the operator of the delivery application (hereinafter referred to as the app) 'Baedal Minjok,' has declared war on illegal review manipulation companies. On the 30th, Woowa Brothers announced that they plan to file a complaint with the police against review manipulation companies that gained unfair profits by posting false reviews on the Baedal Minjok app. These companies are suspected of ordering from stores listed on Baedal Minjok by paying 5,000 to 10,000 KRW more than the food price, writing fake reviews, and pocketing the difference.
For example, they agree to write a positive review for chicken priced at 18,000 KRW, pay 23,000 KRW to the store owner, and then keep the 5,000 KRW difference as a fee. Such illegal activities are known to have mainly occurred in corporate-style restaurants with ample funds.
Since September last year, Woowa Brothers has established a dedicated team called the Fraud Transaction Monitoring Team to continuously monitor all restaurant reviews, including positive and negative ones, and detect such cases. The Fraud Transaction Monitoring Team comprehensively considers factors such as the review writing rate compared to orders and the pattern of review count increases to inspect hundreds of thousands of reviews posted daily. Woowa Brothers detected and took action on about 20,000 false reviews last year alone.
Woowa Brothers is also advancing its technology for detecting fraudulent reviews. Since October last year, they have introduced a review inspection function using various artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. AI first classifies all reviews to check for personal information exposure, obscene or inappropriate content, and when suspicious content is detected, the dedicated inspection team carefully examines the risky reviews. They are also strengthening activities to eradicate fake reviews. They send documented requests to stop illegal activities to review manipulation companies both online and offline and plan to conduct campaigns for store owners to prohibit fake reviews. For businesses that repeatedly and maliciously post false reviews, they intend to impose advertising bans and contract termination according to internal penalty policies.

A Woowa Brothers representative emphasized, "For Baemin to be a good platform, restaurants must be able to be chosen by consumers based on the most fundamental competitiveness, the taste of the food, and for that, the reliability of reviews is essential," adding, "Even if it is an extremely small number of cases, we will strengthen monitoring and detection functions so that illegal reviews cannot take root on Baedal Minjok at all, making it an app that anyone can trust and use."
