LG HelloVision Holds Special Talk for Second Local Channel
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] LG HelloVision held a special talk show titled "Talking about the Region" twice to celebrate the launch of its second regional channel. The purpose was to reflect on the role of local broadcasting and to discuss measures for decentralization and balanced regional development together.
This special talk was conducted under two themes: ▲ Directions for the development of decentralization and the role of local broadcasting ▲ Balanced regional development. Experts including government officials, university professors, and researchers participated as panelists to share their insights. The program was hosted by broadcaster Seo Kyung-seok. It can be viewed on LG HelloVision’s regional channel at 4 p.m. on Mondays this week and next (March 30 and April 6).
In Part 1, the discussion focused on the direction decentralization and local broadcasting should take. The panelists agreed that creating an environment where diversity and autonomy can be exercised throughout the regions is crucial for the advancement of decentralization. They also concurred that local broadcasting must fulfill its unique role by delivering local news and hidden values closest to the residents, thereby enabling the expression of regional diversity and autonomy. Panelists included Kim Soon-eun, Chairperson of the Decentralization Committee; Ma Kang-rae, Professor of Urban Administration at Chung-Ang University; Lee Jae-kwan, Director of the Local Autonomy and Decentralization Office at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety; and Kim Seo-jung, Professor of Journalism at Sungkonghoe University.
Professor Kim Seo-jung of Sungkonghoe University said about local broadcasting, “Since central media covers nationwide stories, only limited resources can be allocated to individual regions,” adding, “Local broadcasting should leverage its unique strengths to foster a sense of community and address practical local issues.”
Part 2 featured a lively debate on the current status and future of balanced regional development measures. While positively evaluating the continuous promotion of balanced regional development policies, the panelists agreed on the need to consider more diverse policies to enable regions to develop self-sustaining capabilities. Panelists included Lee Ki-won, Acting Chairperson of the National Balanced Development Committee; Mo Jong-rin, Professor of Public Administration at Yonsei University; Ha Hye-su, Professor of Public Administration at Kyungpook National University; and Seo Wang-jin, Director of the Seoul Institute. Acting Chairperson Lee Ki-won emphasized that “in addition to policy support, the region’s self-driven efforts are important,” stating, “We need to cultivate the insight to discover hidden local resources and, based on that, directly consider the region’s identity.”
