Suwon City Operates Temporary Living Facilities for Asymptomatic Overseas Entrants...Nation's First
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province is operating the nation's first temporary living facility where asymptomatic overseas arrivals can stay until they receive their COVID-19 test results.
On the 26th, Suwon City announced that it decided to utilize about 80 rooms at the Central Election Commission Election Training Center dormitory in Seodun-dong, Gwonseon-gu as a temporary living facility.
Currently, four people have been admitted to this facility, and 22 arrivals are scheduled to be admitted by the night of the 26th. Not only arrivals from Europe and the United States but also all asymptomatic overseas arrivals registered as residents in Suwon City can apply for admission.
The government currently conducts specimen tests at airport quarantine facilities for symptomatic overseas arrivals, but asymptomatic individuals are required to self-quarantine at home without separate isolation measures and receive diagnostic testing within three days (for arrivals from Europe) or undergo a mandatory two-week self-quarantine (for arrivals from the United States).
Suwon City is the first local government to establish a temporary living facility where asymptomatic overseas arrivals can stay until their diagnostic test results are available.
Suwon City transports arrivals from the airport to the living facility by van and covers the costs of meals and hygiene kits. Specimen testing costs are supported by national and provincial funds. To prevent infection, only one person is allowed per van. Those showing symptoms upon arrival undergo diagnostic testing at the airport quarantine facility.
Admission is possible after signing an application form and a consent form containing living rules. Admitted individuals stay for 1 to 2 days after specimen collection until test results are available. If tested positive, they are transferred to a nationally designated hospital; if negative, they return home for a two-week self-quarantine. Suwon City transports discharged individuals back home by van.
After inspecting the facility on the day, Yeom Tae-young, Mayor of Suwon City, emphasized, "Although there were no symptoms upon arrival, symptoms may appear later resulting in a positive diagnosis. We will thoroughly manage asymptomatic overseas arrivals to minimize the spread of infectious diseases in the local community."
